A 1999 essay by Michelle Klein-Häss, From Now On, Please Keep It Real! was a reaction to the fantasy episodes "Daria!" and "Depth Takes a Holiday".
Reflecting contemporary fandom views, Klein-Häss argues that the fantastical episodes could have been from any show and that the humour in Daria' strongly "relates to real life, particularly for girls and women". She cautions that "gimmicks" give the impression writers are running out of ideas.
