Firstly, Daria begins to "come out of her shell" in the sense that she opens herself up to Tom more by the end, after Tom noted earlier in the film that Daria was reluctant to do so out of fear of being vulnerable. Towards the end of the film, Daria quietly admits under the mumbling of her own breath that Tom was right and agrees to give him a chance in spite of her own feelings about Tom's family and social rank. Jane's further encouragement about giving Tom another chance allowed Daria to reach a point where she could step out of her comfort zone and give Tom a real chance at a meaningful relationship. This concept is built upon as Daria and Tom date throughout the fifth season, in episodes such as "Sappy Anniversary", "The Story of D", "One J at a Time", and "My Night at Daria's".
