Daria's inner monolougemonologue runs through the story as she stands by Jane during a ceremony. Her thoughts reveal she is upset that Jane has accepted second place as all she can accomplish and seems herself not only satisfied, but ecstatic over it.

The end of the story reveals that 'second place' is a metaphor, as Jane is the bride in a wedding ceremony. Daria feels that Jane's new husband will always put her second, behind his own ambitions and desires. She feels Jane deserves someone who will love and appreciate her fully and not consider her 'secondary'.
