Line 3: While Martha "decided" that Martin will be a preacher, John was content to let his son choose his own career. John has shown appreciation for [[Daria]] Morgendorffer\|Daria's]] help in saving Martin's life and believed that there is something going on between the two. He chose not to interfere, which wasn't easy given his wife's horror at such a romance. When Daria and Martin later announced that they were indeed 'an item', he supported them. John was later shot by his wife during a psychotic episode and left to die in their burning home. He was rescued from the fire by Martin, but soon went into a coma and died from his injuries several hours later.
