Randy was a cadet at Buxton Ridge Military Academy and joined at the same time as Jake Morgendorffer: he was sent there for putting his fist through a wall. He was Jake's only friend, at least in Jake's early days, and he said the violent cadet was "a good pal to have". Randy went AWOL after four years and Jake was severely tempted to go with him.
