The daughter of wealthy parents, Helen Barksdale's early years were spent in the shadow of her youngerolder sister Rita, whowhom her parents spoiled rotten and to whom they gave all their love, attention, and money. Helen grew up extremely resentful of being ignored but at the same time determined to be the best at everything she did in order to try and one day win the approval of her parents. When hard work failed to win her the love and attention of her parents, Helen responded by becoming a hippie and joining the late 1960s counter-culture. While in college, she met [[Jake Morgendorffer]] and the two began dating. Jake and Helen both had similar problems with their families and became an item. After college, the two moved into a commune with friends before getting married. Helen enrolled in law school and much like her husband, rejected their hippie lifestyles and embraced the world of corporate America.

Helen became a corporate lawyer, a career that quickly became the main focus of her life. Even after giving birth to two daughters, she continued to practice law at the expense of her family. While failing to make partner at the various law firms she worked for, Helen became the family bread-winner due to her long hours put in at work, though the exact amount that she earns in comparison to her husband is never revealed either in actual salary numbers or real work hours put in respectively with either parent.
