As a byproduct of the Helen plotline, Amy is forced to confront her own issues regarding relationships. While "The Tie That Chokes" shows her relationshiprapport with Daria to be solid, it also reveals theher distance between her andwith Helen and her insecurities about her relationship with [[Joel Silverman]]. In spite of Joel's plearequest, Amy refuses to tell her family about him until Helen practically forces it out of her; then, after she and Helen part angrily, Amy refuses to tell Joel why she is upset, prompting him to call Helen directly ("That Thing You Say").
