An area of military jurisdiction designated after the events of Black Saturday (as described in the serial fic Apocalyptic Daria), the First Military Section is under the direct command of Major General Bartholomew J. Simpson, by means of a direct Presidential Order.

The First Military Section is composed of the Commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia, and the States of Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia. The area of the 1st M.S. has been divided into four specific zone designations:

Dead Zones[edit]

Dead Zones are areas which have sustained direct hits by nuclear weapons and rendered uninhabitable. 1st M.S. Dead Zones are:

  • Washington, D.C. and all areas within 35 miles of the capital
  • Norfolk, Virginia and all areas within a 30-mile radius
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and all areas within a 25-mile radius
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and all areas within a 25-mile radius

All dead zones are off-limits, with plans to seal them off. Any unauthorized person or persons found in a dead zone will be shot on sight.

Red Zones[edit]

Red Zones are areas contaminated by the fallout generated by nuclear detonations on Black Saturday. Red zones have been designated as restricted areas, with access limited to military and government personnel only.

Any unauthorized persons caught in the red zones will be subject to summary execution by military and police forces.

For the 1st M.S., the red zones are (by county):

In West Virginia:

  • Hancock
  • Brooke

In Pennsylvania:

  • Washington
  • Beaver
  • Butler
  • Armstrong
  • Indiana
  • Cambria
  • Westmoreland
  • Clearfield
  • Chester
  • Montgomery
  • Bucks
  • Erie
  • Crawford

In Maryland:

  • the entire state (east of Frederick County).

In Virginia:

  • Southampton
  • Sussex
  • Greensville
  • Dinwiddie
  • Surrey
  • Isle of Wight
  • James City
  • Gloucester
  • Mathews
  • Lancaster
  • Northampton
  • Accomack
  • Loudoun
  • Prince William
  • Fauquier.

The entire state of Delaware has been declared a Red Zone.

Yellow Zones[edit]

Yellow Zones are those areas which have been affected by evacuations from Red Zones, as well as those areas undergoing health, logistical and civil disturbance problems. Yellow Zone designations extend out to a 10-mile radius around the named cities.

For the 1st M.S., the Yellow Zones are:

In West Virginia:

  • Wheeling
  • Moundsville
  • Morgantown
  • Berkeley Springs
  • Martinsburg

In Pennsylvania:

  • the entire state south of the 30th parallel (not already covered within Dead or Red zone designations)

In Maryland:

  • Frederick County; all counties to the west

In Virginia:

  • the portion of the state east of a line stretching from Winchester in the north to South Boston near the North Carolina border.

Only those people who live in yellow zones will be permitted in, as well as those who have been evacuated there. Effective immediately, all travel in yellow zones must be approved by local military and police commands. Army officials are allowing refugees to leave the Yellow Zones, provided they have approval from their destination to travel there.

Blue Zones[edit]

Blue Zones are those areas within the First Military Section that have not been specifically named in the previous zone descriptions.
